Philippines – the journey of a Moro Islamic peacebuilder

Datuan Magon is not your typical young person living in Mindanao, the Philippines.

The 33 year old is the Deputy Secretary General of UNYPAD (United Youth for Peace and Development), the largest Muslim youth organisation in the Philippines registered and accredited by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of the government.

A strong believer in peaceful approaches to violence in his region, Datuan has worked in a number of roles to convey and spread that message over the last decade.

Effective local action: from early warning to peacebuilding

This report captures the main experiences and findings of the Capacities for Peace project. Implemented by Conciliation Resources and Saferworld, the project worked with local actors to enhance the effectiveness of early warning and early action in 32 conflict-affected countries.

Proscribing peace

For international NGOs and local civil society actors and communities, engaging with armed groups for peaceful ends carries immediate risks to physical security and to reputation, given the political sensitivities of the task. Likewise running peacebuilding programmes in conflict contexts where armed groups operate is complex and high-risk. If the group is on a terrorist list then these risks only multiply.
