The Belfast Agreement in Northern Ireland was the result of arduous negotiations to end 30 years of sectarian violence. This Accord looks at the factors that led to the negotiations and the impact of history on current aspirations. In 2003, a new article was added, arguing for a new culture of cooperation in politics to embed the peace process.
Clem McCartney is an independent consultant on conflict and community issues from Northern Ireland, where he has worked with the main protagonists on the peace process. Recent involvements include the Sri Lankan and Georgian-Abkhaz conflicts.
