In this article Kristian Herbolzheimer of Conciliation Resources draws attention to the multiple forms of violence which exist despite a holding ceasefire.  There is therefore a need to identify and unmask the interests that sustain violence. Some of those who benefit from the status quo may feel tempted to prevent change through violent coercion. It is important to prevent this spoiling potential by addressing the legitimate fears and highlighting the benefits for all from a peaceful situation.

It is also necessary to identify and deconstruct the world views and the myths that sustain violence. Especially in protracted armed conflicts, people may end up believing violence is 'normal'. In Mindanao this has led to normalising a 'gun culture'. But as long as people consider violence to be normal or unavoidable it will be difficult to build peace.

Building peace is therefore a challenge and a responsibility that reaches far beyond the negotiating table. It involves not only the armed actors but also the business sector, religious sector, local government and civil society.
