In light of the death of Alfonso Cano, head of the Armed Revolutionary Forces of Colombia, Kristian Herbolzheimer of Conciliation Resources comments on whether or not this military gain is also a victory for peace.

The article also explains that a change in approach is essential.  There must be a more inclusive and democratic process and the analysis of the conflict needs to be both wider and deeper.  For example, the web of criminal actors benefitting from the status quo should be recognised and root causes of conflict, such as inequality, need to be dealt with.

There is hope, however, and there have been encouraging developments, including a landmark law on the state's culpability in terrorist violence.
