Politics and mediation: The Schlaining Process

In these three chapters the authors describe the Schlaining Process: one of the few processes of unofficial diplomacy, involving work on conflict transformation with both Abkhaz and Georgian officials, politicians and civil society activists over 10 years. This section describes the interesting and complex process, which although essential, came up against a number of “realpolitik” obstacles.

Since the mid-1990s, international and local civil society actors have been engaged in a wide range of different initiatives aimed at transforming the conflicts in the South Caucasus. A number of these initiatives are described in International Alert's book Mediation and dialogue in the South Caucasus: A reflection on 15 years of conflict transformation initiatives.
The contributions - including these extracts on the Schlaining Process - were selected to demonstrate the diversity of peacebuilding work undertaken by civil society, including work with politicians, economic actors, women, media, academia and cultural figures, to name a few.
