In this study, Graham Carrington of Conciliation Resources explores the trade boom along the Uganda-Sudan (now South Sudan) border.
The report examines key policy frameworks and also experiences in the region and looks at issues such as food security, employment and the roles of local government and foreign traders.
It concludes that trade policy and practice between the two communities contributes to peacebuilding and socio-economic recovery but in some cases is also creating tensions.
It recommends that urgent changes are made. For example, local border communities need to benefit more from increased business activity and customs revenue collection needs reform.
