In this article, Conciliation Resources' Andy Carl analyses the key issues for international non-governmental organisations (INGOs) when supporting local peacemaking capacities.

For example, how the failure of INGOs to fully understand a conflict can aggravate an already volatile situation when trying to help and how there are risks in overlooking the role of local organisations.  The article draws on cases from Sierra Leone, Zaire (now DR Congo), Liberia and Fiji to illustrate lessons to be learned.
